
Ervin Wooley, known as Wooligan, is a Birmingham-born music engineer and sound system operator with deep roots in reggae culture. Growing up in Aston, Newtown, Lozells, and Handsworth, he developed an early passion for electronics, learning from legendary local builders like Legs The Giant and Carl Matador. By 1976, he had built his first amplifier, setting the stage for a lifelong career in sound engineering. Wooligan went on to open his own studio, “Mind Searchers,” producing records, cutting dubplates, and working with major Jamaican artists such as Junior Cat, Echo Minott, General Degree, Red Rat, Justin Hinds, Laurel Aitken, and Lord Tanamo. His craftsmanship has powered renowned sound systems including Jah Orthodox Sound, Livewire Sound, and Jah Voice Sound System. Through decades of dedication, he has become a key figure in preserving and advancing reggae’s authentic sound.
